After World War II, Trappist Monastery St. Sixtus, located in east Belgium near the border of France in the town of Watou, decided to stop brewing commercially. Wanting to keep the beer available commercially, Mr. Evarist Deconinck made an agreement with the monastery to produce the beer in a brewery off site for 30 years. However in 1992, an agreement between Trappist Monasteries (of which there are now seven current brewing monasteries) decided that only beer produced inside of a monastery could be called ‘Trappist’. At this point the brewery had to drop the Trappist name and reformed under the name of St. Bernardus while also expanding their range of beers.
