Breckenridge Barrel Aged Imperial Cherry Stout | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

Breckenridge Brewery today announced the launch of Barrel Aged Imperial Cherry Stout, the second release in its Brewery Lane series. Aged in 50% whiskey barrels and 50% port wine barrels, Imperial Cherry Stout features sweet-sour Montmorency tart cherries which play on the dark fruit flavors prevalent in a traditional Imperial Stout. Breckenridge has created a complex flavor profile that marries the tartness of cherries with hints of wine, whiskey, and oak. Similar to the farm-inspired location of the brewery’s 12-acer Littleton campus, for which the series is named, Barrel Aged Imperial Cherry Stout is alluring and memorable. “The Brewery Lane Series is a celebration of innovation and reflects our ambition to continue making more bold and adventurous beers,” said Todd Usry, President and Brewmaster of Breckenridge Brewery. “Imperial Cherry Stout is sophisticated yet welcoming, and aging it in a combination of port wine barrels ... As the name suggests, this 11.3% ABV American Imperial Stout is the foundation of everyone’s favorite, Sunday Morning Stout, with a twist (and without the barrel aging)… This brew captures everything you’d expect from a traditional molé – coffee, chocolate, heat and smokiness. Foremost is coffee, which is followed by layers of chocolate courtesy of the chocolate malt, cocoa powder and cacao nibs. Finally, a subtle lingering heat and smokiness from our blend of ancho, pasilla, mulato and chipotle peppers, as well as cinnamon, which is gone by the time you’re ready for your next sip. Just as Patrick Henry once stood addressing the city of Richmond in 1775 to spur resistance against the tyrannical British Empire, 20 years ago we were stirred to join the cry for resistance against the tyrannical oppression of industrial beer. And now, the opening of our Richmond brewery is yet another shot in the salvo that has been fired on behalf of American brewing independence. If we wish to brew free, if we mean to retain our identity and preserve the privilege of access to independent craft beer, we must recognize it is a group effort. We do not stand alone. ...
