Trillium IWANTTOBU DOUBLE IPA (Zero IBU Beer) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

This past August, we were fortunate to be a part of the inaugural Forever Summer Festival, hosted by The Veil at their brewery in Richmond, Virginia, where JC met owner/Head brewer, Matt Tarpey. Matt’s approach to brewing breaks from conventionalism by pushing boundaries and methodologies. IwanttoBU blends Trillium’s techniques and house character, with The Veil’s unique brewing style to create an incredibly flavorful and aromatic hop forward beer with no kettle hop additions. IwanttoBU is a 0 IBU beer with no hop additions in the kettle. A large whirlpool addition of El Dorado, Simcoe, Citra and Citra Lupulin Powder, plus a massive dry hop (4 lbs per barrel) of Citra and Simcoe. The nose is filled with notes of pine needles, citrus zest and plum. Flavors of lemongrass and citrus emerge on the palate, complimented by a dank, piney character. The beer finishes with ... Inspired by traditional Danish wheat bread, this beer incorporates stone ground whole wheat flour in the mash to create a rustic, bready character. For layered complexity, we added tangerine peel and raw wildflower honey into the whirlpool followed by a double dry hop of Citra/Amarillo. Candied orange, lemon and freshly baked bread permeate the nose. Flavors of tangerine peel, grape and rustic bread emerge on the palate, rounded out by a crisp and balanced finish. Read More »

Trillium Headroom Doulbe IPA | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare your palates… Simply put, Headroom is the hoppiest beer we’ve ever brewed with more than 7 lbs. per barrel featuring heavy doses of Galaxy & Mosaic. This is a truly special Double IPA brewed only once a year, released during the last two summers to celebrate Hop Jam; Vermont’s annual lupulin-centric beer fest. Headroom embodies our hoppy coup de grâce (for now)- we hope you enjoy! Dank. Citrus. Tropical Fruit. Juice. Read More »

Tröegs Nimble Giant (Best of 2016?) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

We didn’t set out to release another double IPA, but when we tasted this hop combination, we latched on and didn’t let go. It started as an experiment with mosaic hops, and after six scratch batches it became Nimble Giant. The layers of Mosaic, Azacca, and Simcoe hops take over your senses. Mango, tropical fruit and creamsicle notes give the beer a silky, juicy underbelly that builds to a punch in the face grapefruit rind, honeysuckle and pineapple. Read More »

Alpine Beer Company Bad Boy (Best West Coast DIPA?) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

The return of “Bad Boy,” our ‘other’ double IPA, happens this Thursday as soon as our doors open. It’s NOT bottled but we will be filling growlers at the brewery and glasses at the pub. This beer, created by Shawn, uses hops that weren’t around when Pure Hoppiness was invented. That’s one of the reasons it has such a huge hop presence. We also use predominately Premium British ‘Maris Otter’ barley which enriches the flavor and deepens the body. Be careful at 9.25% abv Read More »

Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0 Video Beer Review | San Diego Beer Vlog EP 589

Stone Ruination IPA was the first full-time brewed and bottled West Coast double IPA on the planet. As craft beer has evolved over the years, so too have techniques for maximizing hop flavors and aromas. For the second incarnation of our groundbreaking India pale ale, we employed dry hopping and hop bursting to squeeze every last drop of piney, citrusy, tropical essence from the hops that give this beer its incredible character. We’ve also updated the name to reflect the imperial-level intensity that’s evident in every sip. Join us in cheering this, the second stanza in our “Liquid Poem to the Glory of the Hop.” Read More »

Trillium Upper Case Double IPA (Best East Coast IPA?) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

UPPER CASE has a delicate, dry pilsner malt character with a smooth, soft, doughy mouthfeel from the raw wheat, oily hop resin which all serves as a canvas for this twice dry hopped 9% double IPA. Overipe mango, pineapple and passion fruit aromas leap out as the beer is poured. The impression of tropical fruit also takes the lead in the flavor which is layered further by white wine, pine resin and grapefruit zest. Hopped primarily with Mosaic with supporting roles played by Galaxy, Citra and Columbus. We figured there will be considerable interest, so brewed 3 batches! The first batch of UPPER CASE will be available on March 21st at 10am. Limit four 25.4/750ml bottles, up to 64oz in growler fills per person. Read More »

Bells The Oracle DIPA Ale | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the floral aromatic punch of two separate dry-hop sessions with Amarillo and NZ Pacific Jade. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise. Read More »
