Sierra Nevada Barrel Aged Narwhal Imperial Stout (Best of 2014?) | Beer Geek Nation Beer Reviews

Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind. Read More »

The Bruery Sucre (16.9% ABV) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

TO me this is what The Bruery does the best, big, angry, complex, barrel aged beers. And their newest anniversary beer is no exception. Check out the review to see why this one sands out. Cheers! “May is our anniversary month and we are excited to release Sucre, our sixth anniversary ale this week! This beer is brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using our house Belgian yeast strain and then blended using the solera method, where a portion of each of our anniversary ales is saved in our barrels and blended in with the next year’s production, providing more complexity and depth of character that comes with age.” Read More »

Founders KBS (2014 vintage) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

Here is my annual review for the one and only FOunders KBS. Does it hold up to previous releases? Check out the review to find out. Cheers! A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter. Read More »

Founders Sweet Repute (12.6% ABV) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

It’s not always a good thing when your reputation precedes you. But the complexity of this powerful wheat wine will give it a Sweet Repute no matter where, when or how your paths meet. Our brewing team painstakingly choreographed each layer of this beer’s characteristics, starting with a healthy wheat and roasted malt base and adding clean, fragrant hops. It’s one-hundred percent barrel aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels and bourbon barrels over the course of sixteen months, then blended using carefully calculated ratios for the ultimate final product. The resulting 12.6% ABV liquid pours a bright warm russet with a stubborn ivory head and an intoxicatingly sweet nutty aroma. Take your time allowing the layers of flavors to unfold… Because it’ll only get better. Beer geek nation craft beer reviews Read More »

Stone Southern Charred (12.6% ABV) | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

2012 Double Bastard Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels Arrogant Bastard Ale’s (really) big brother, this dark amber ale is brewed with a huge malt bill and a belligerent amount of hops. It’s a heavy, bitter beast of a beer and absolutely not for the timid. Beer geek nation craft beer reviews Read More »

Firestone Walker XVII Anniversary Ale | Beer Geek Nation Craft Beer Reviews

During the dog days of the autumn grape harvest, thirsty overworked winemakers are fond of saying, “It takes a lot of beer to make great wine.” But at Firestone Walker Brewing Company, the opposite is also true, as 14 local winemakers recently convened to help the brewing team blend the next Firestone Walker Anniversary Ale. The result is “XVII”—a vintage blend of seven eclectic component ales aged in retired bourbon, brandy and whiskey barrels. XVII will be officially released starting at the brewery on November 2. The blending session has become an annual rite at the brewery, with Brewmaster Matt Brynildson enlisting his winemaker friends from the surrounding Paso Robles wine country. “I’m not aware of any other beer that is blended like this, from so many distinct components,” Brynildson said. “That’s why we bring in the winemakers.” During the blending session, the friendly ...
