Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: GABF 2014: Denver and Ft. Collins

I shot hardly any footage from the floor of the 2014 Great American Beer Festival but I did shoot some footage on my trip up to Ft. Collins when visiting Funkwerks and Horse & Dragon. Missing from my visit was video of Crooked Stave, Odell, Trve Brewing, Tap & Handle, Falling Rock, and the GABF Awards Ceremony. Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: Coronado 18th Anniversary Ale Imperial IPA Video Beer Review

This August, Coronado Brewing Company will commemorate 18 years of brewing with its 18th Anniversary Ale. The company will also toast a banner year with an 18th anniversary party to be held on August 2nd at the company’s tasting room on Knoxville Street in San Diego. The year’s successes included medaling for the first time ever for its Black Sails IPA, from the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO where Coronado won a Silver in the American-Style Black Ale category. At the World Beer Cup, Coronado also triumphed as the champion among mid-size brewers, as it received the highly coveted Champion Brewery/Champion Brewmaster Award, arguably the most prestigious award in craft brewing. The brewer netted a Gold award for their Islander IPA and a Silver for Old Scallywag. Part of the brewer’s Crown Series, the 18th Anniversary Ale is a double IPA ... Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: Stone 18th Anniversary IPA Video Beer Review

As we compose the text for this celebratory beer—a golden-brown India pale ale dry-hopped exclusively and abundantly with El Dorado hops—we stand ready to leap from the precipice of all we know into a new era for our company, our beers and, most importantly, our fans. It’s one that will see us exploring new territory, both geographically and creatively, as we evolve from pacesetters for the American craft brewing movement to cross-planetary champions of the worldwide cause of craft, hoisting our banner to proclaim artisanal beers’ vast superiority over stripped-down, business-driven, industrialized, fizzy, yellow mediocrity. We thank you for shadowing us for the first 18 years of our journey, and welcome you to join us for next leg and all that follows. Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: Stone Bastard In The Rye (Arrogant Bastard Aged in Templeton Rye Barrels) Video Beer Review

How do you up the overly healthy haughtiness of an already Arrogant Bastard? Stick said bastard in a Templeton Rye whiskey barrel and allow the nectar and woodiness trapped within it to take that strong ale to places as of yet uncharted. Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: New Holland Dragon’s Milk Video Beer Review

Dragon’s Milk is a 17th century term used to describe the strong beer usually reserved for royalty. This strong ale was aged in oak for over 120 days. The aging process extracts flavors from the wood, which contribute to its complex character. Hints of bourbon flavor perfectly compliment its roasted malts to produce a beer fit for a King. Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: Struise Pannepot Reserva (2009) Video Beer Review

The Pannepot Reserva was an idea from my brew collegue Carlo who wanted to age Pannepot in genuine French oak barrels (barrique 225 liters). We have brewed 90HL at the end of 2005 which has been aging on oak ever since (14 months). 30 Hl was bottled Tuesday 8th May 2007. 60Hl has been transferred now to second hand calvados oak vessels and will be bottled again early autumn 2007, we will name that batch Pannepot Grand Reserva. As quality and results rule at Struise, the Reserva was already brewed again and aging on oak. Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: The Bruery / 3 Floyds Rue D’Floyd Video Beer Review

Rue D’Floyd is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.4% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in bourbon barrels for one year. Rue D’Floyd developed notes of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee from barrel aging, which was supplemented with vanilla beans, Portola coffee, TCHO cacao nibs and cherries prior to bottling. The result is a wonderfully balanced yet flavorful ale exploding with coffee, dark chocolate, caramel and dark fruit. Read More »

Beer Geek Nation presents San Diego Beer Vlog: Three Floyds Gumballhead Video Beer Review

An American Wheat Beer brewed with red wheat and boat loads of amarillo hops gives this summer brew a lemony finish. The slight haze in the bottle is from the bottle-conditioning, where yeast is added to the bottle for a secondary fermentation. Gumballhead is a Skingraft Comics hero. Check out Skingraft Comics and Records at www.skingraftrecords.com. Cheers! Read More »
